Method: Pick a short funny joke made for radio, add text and motion. Results: ``Beethoven Backing Up His Truck`` by The Radio Free Vestibule is funnier with visuals. Conclusion: Yes! Humor translates well from the aural to the visual if a perfect graphic equivalent is found to match the comedic timing of the sound. ``and now Radio Free Vestibule The sound joke is dependent on
the long set up. The visual design and animation mirror of this long
set up of the sound track by presenting a static column list of Classical
composers. Nothing happens. A slow and steady nonsensical movement
of the word Beethoven is made in advance of the punch line. With the
sound comes the surprise ending, "the pay off" of the joke. A second
laugh occurs when the realization comes that visually, this is all there
is. This is very successful animation. People like it. It's one of their favorites. Because it works so well we in fact don't learn very much about it as a test. We see that a visual joke can be built on a sound joke. But what are the combined sound humor elements and textual humor elements that have combined here. More tests are needed. |
